BACK THEN

written by BILLY DOUKAS

THIS PHOTO MAKES ME LAUGH when I see it. It was taken at Deering Oaks as World War II was beginning. That’s my mother, Rita Panagakos (eventually Doukas), driving with her two older brothers, Nick and Khrist, in back. There were five brothers and one girl. I vaguely remember a story that at some point they crashed the car into a tree in the west end, got out, ditched it and ran home. Young teenagers in the ’40s. No computers back then, so they probably got away with it.
