Simplicity may be the mantra at Huston & Company, but father and son Bill and Saer Huston acknowledge that owners of their furniture often find themselves marveling over the details.
“We have people who call us five years down the road and they’re seeing new things in the wood and the joinery,” says Saer.
Huston & Company produces myriad custom furniture pieces for individuals and institutions, all of the items functional as well as beautiful. Bill points to Scandinavian, Asian and Shaker influences for the spare style.
“We do things that are purposeful,” explains Saer. “We let the lines and wood speak for itself.” If they do add a detail, such as the brass accents on the Newton coffee table, it’s meant to enhance the table’s functionality.
About 90% of Huston & Company work is custom. “Custom can throw some people off kilter,” says Bill. “We embrace the opportunity to work with our clientele, asking them questions to determine their needs, showing them examples and following up with a drawing and a quote.”
The two are also driven to create prototype pieces, either for their showroom or juried shows. “It’s always fun and it usually ends up in a piece that is good for us. It keeps us fresh,” says Saer.
